The current year's monsoon is making the situation better for ravi crops due to the prolonged and withdrawal delays. Given the high moisture content and abundant availability of water, the cultivation of ravi crops will also be high, in which case the demand for fertilizer is also increasing.
The agriculture ministry estimates the demand for fertilizers to be as high as seven per cent in the coming ravi season as compared to last rabi season. The demand for urea is estimated to be around 8 million tonnes in the next rabi season as compared to last year's 8.5 million tonnes of urea. In addition, the demand for other fertilizers can be high.
Production of kharif and ravi crops is expected to remain high as the current monsoon is expected to be higher. Demand for compost was also slow due to the early monsoon delay in the kharif season of the current year. However, the demand for fertilizers and seeds was increased after the monsoon became active, sources in the Agriculture Ministry said.
Meanwhile, kharif plantation data released by the Ministry of Agriculture shows that kharif sowing has been completed on an area of 1 lakh hectare which was up to 1 lakh hectare as of September 1 last year. The Ministry of Agriculture hopes to produce a good crop due to the satisfactory progress in kharif planting.
The main kharif crop paddy cultivation, which was initially low, is about 3.5 lakh hectares, which is down from last year. Pulses were also down by 8.5% compared to last year.
Peanut sowing in oilseeds was down by 8.5% while soybean acreage was seen higher than yesterday. Sugarcane acreage is witnessing a decline of 5.5 per cent.
