Two days of rain in Nashik threatens to lose the onion supply as a result of rainfall

Mumbai, Ta. September 25, 2019, Wednesday

Onion on the one hand, when onion prices have gone up, the rains falling in Nashik for the past six hours have resulted in the decline of onion availability in the wholesale and retail markets. Lasalgaon in Nashik district of Maharashtra has a large crop of onions. Nashik is the major producer of onion.

Onion area has been harvested on an area of 3 hectares in Nashik district. In cities like Mumbai-Delhi, onion prices have reached around Rs 5 per kg, due to the disturbance of the rains, it is possible to lose the supply, local sources said.

Due to the rains, the onion crop taken late in the kharif season has been damaged and not only in the godowns but also in the water, it is feared to rot. Nashik district is forecast to continue rains for two days.

At present, the situation is quite fluid and traders cannot even predict in which direction the wholesale price of onion will go. There is no denying the possibility of widespread damage to the onion if the rainfall increases.

Wholesale and retail prices have also risen due to supply disruptions in Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh and the decline in supply from Madhya Pradesh.

On the other hand, onion prices will come down in a few days as new onion arrivals from Karnataka have started. In addition, onions in government warehouses will also be released during the festive season.

Delays in the monsoon withdrawal this year have raised the threat of damage to kharif crops, but as the moisture content in the soil is increasing, the situation is becoming favorable for ravi crops, sources in the agriculture ministry said earlier.

If the onion price does not fall, then the stock limit will be implemented

The government is taking steps to curb the onion prices. Stock restrictions will be imposed on traders if onion buffer stocks do not fall even after the stock is finished.

Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ramvilas Paswan said, "Since there is concern about farmers' interest, it is advisable to wait a while before imposing stock limits and adopt a wait policy." The supply of an agency like Nafed in the local market will improve the situation in the next few days.

So far all possible steps have been taken to increase supply and control the onion prices. If the onion price is high, we have to check the stock limit option. After the buffer stock is over, the government will consider imposing stock limits on traders.

It should be noted here that onions are currently available at Rs. Available in the market in the range of 1 to 5.
