Non-food credit growth in the banking system was at a record low of twenty months

At the end of the fortnight ended August 1, non-food credit growth in the banking system declined to 8.2 percent annually. This credit growth is at a 20-month low. Deposit growth has also been low for the past nine weeks, according to the Reserve Bank data. In the fortnight ended August 1, the growth rate of deposits stood at 8.5 percent annually.
At the end of the fortnight of August 1, the banking system had a total deposits of Rs 1.8 lakh crore. The total amount of credit outstanding was Rs.5 lakh crore. Credit against the deposit stood at 8.5 percent.
By July of the current fiscal, the industry had declined by 8 percent in bank credit and credit against consumer durables declined by 8 percent. In addition, loans against FDs were down by 5.5 per cent.
It may be mentioned here that in the banking system, the repo rate has been reduced by 5 basis points in the current year, although the expected growth in credit is not seen. In view of this fact, the Reserve Bank has made it mandatory for banks to link their lending rates to external benchmarks from October 1st.
