Lack of Skilled Workforce Claims to be Big Challenge to Make-India Campaign

Mumbai, Ta. 11 October 2019, Friday

Due to the lack of skilled workforce, especially welding engineers, welding supervisors and skilled welders, cutters, equipment operators in the country, companies especially companies such as Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) are not particularly competitive against global competition. There are many companies in India that can provide global welding operations with skilled welders.

It is estimated that there is a shortage of about 1 lakh welding professionals in the country and the number of welding professionals in the next five to three years will reach 2.5 lakh in the next five to three years, considering the investment plans of Rs 1 lakh crore in the infrastructure of the central government. Sources in the Mumbai branch said.

It was also claimed that the lack of skilled workforce in India was delaying the construction sector and increasing the power generation capacity. The Make in India campaign has created opportunities for growth in the manufacturing sector but it is also facing the limitations of the Skilled Workforce.

It is worth mentioning here that while India has been pushed back from 5th place globally to 5th in the Competitiveness Index, it is time to provide skilled welders to the country's industries, especially MSMEs, to be globally competitive.

In Australia and Europe countries welding operations are provided with special status which is lacking in India.

The sources also emphasized that the government has taken initiative in this regard and applied certification practices like other sectors, considering the fact that there is no regulation on welding operations in the country.
