The major rabi crops of wheat, chickpea and rye have been planted in the current year. By the end of January last year, wheat sowing has been completed on an area of 3 lakh hectares in this period of the current year as against 3 lakh hectares. Wheat sowing is also seen high in Punjab and Haryana amid farmers' agitation.

Wheat is sown in large quantities in Punjab. The area under chickpea has increased by 4.5 per cent to 114 lakh hectares. The sown area of Rayda has increased by 7% to 4 lakh hectares.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the total area under pulses is 15 lakh hectares as against 18 lakh hectares.

However, the sowing of pulses has been declining as compared to last year. In particular, the area under maize, sorghum, etc. has remained low as compared to last year.

The water level and soil moisture in the reservoirs of most of the states of the country are favorable, so the future for rabi crop is also bright, said sources in the Ministry of Agriculture.
