66 lakh professionals became unemployed in four months

-Engineers, doctors and professors also lost their jobs

-CMIE's shocking report released

New Delhi Dated 18th September 2020 Friday

In just four months, Corona lost 66 lakh professionals with higher educational qualifications, such as engineers, physicians and professors, according to a report.

Such a claim was made in a report released by the Center for the Monitoring of Indian Economy (CMIE). The report said that the progress made in the Indian economy in the last four years could be said to have been washed away in the four months of Corona. This is the first time since 2016 that the employment of professionals has come down.

The CMIE report also claimed that more than 5 million industrial workers had lost their jobs in the last four months. According to a survey by Consumer Pyramid Household, the biggest losers were white collar professionals, such as engineers, doctors, professors, accountants and analysts. However, the data did not include self-employed people. So much so that this data was incomplete.

According to CMIE, between May and August 2019, there were 1.88 crore so-called white collars. At present, the number has come down to 122 million, leaving at least 66 lakh unemployed. This was the biggest decline in the employment sector since 2016.

The worst hit, however, were industrial workers. Between May and August this year, more than 5 million industrial workers lost their jobs and became unemployed. That is a decline of 26 per cent in industrial workers in the last one year. Workers in the medium scale industry, small scale industry and micro scale industry in particular became more unemployed. Such industrial units were severely affected by the lockdown.
