Impact of recession: 66 lakh people lose jobs in last 4 months, CMIE reports

It is estimated that 6.6 million people lost their jobs in India between May and August. It involves many professions including engineer, teacher, doctor. According to a report by CMIE (Center for Monitoring Indian Economy), between May and August, 50 lakh industrial workers lost their jobs. This is the lowest level of employment going after 2016. However the lockdown did not affect white collar clerical employees. Jobs like Office Clerk, BPO / KPO Workers, Data Entry Operators are involved.
The work-from-home mode has also saved many jobs - the office clerk has not lost the jobs of professionals like BPO / KPO workers, data entry operators. The report states that it is possible that the jobs of these employees have been transferred to work-from-home mode. CMIE had earlier projected 1.21 crore jobs in April. However, most of these people also got jobs back in August.
The CMIE report said that most of the jobs went to white collar professionals such as software engineers, doctors, teachers and those working in the private sector. It also includes self-employed people. CMIE said the number of white-collar jobs in May-August last year was 1.88 crore. In May-August this year, the number has come down to 1.22 crore.
