Disruption in supply is likely to push up the price of onions again

Mumbai: Onions will once again make people cry as the price of this sensitive agricultural product will go up in the coming days. The onion crop is being delayed due to rains. On the other hand, due to cyclone Tout, the buffer period of onion is also very short, which will also affect the market price.

Notably, onion prices start rising every year from October to December.

Rating agency Crisil said in its report that if compared to 2014, onion prices could rise by almost 100 per cent. In kharif 2021, the wholesale price of onion may cross the level of Rs 50 per kg. Due to monsoon, onion cultivation in Maharashtra may be difficult. It is estimated that onion production this year may be as low as one to one and a half per cent lower than in kharif 2020.

Rainfall can be clearly seen on onion prices. On the one hand, the overall rainfall in August has been weak and now there are difficulties due to heavy rains in September. The longer the planting of onions, the faster the price will go up. The monsoon will affect onion production and may push up kharif crop prices.
