The decline in electricity consumption in the country is a clear indication that industrial activity has slowed down

The decline in power consumption in the country is indicating that industrial activity has slowed down. Demand for electricity in the country has declined by 5% annually in October. Demand for electricity from industrial-led states like Maharashtra and Gujarat has declined.

In October last year, the total electricity demand in the country stood at 3 billion units, down from 9 billion units in October this year, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Demand for electricity in the country has been steadily declining since August. However, government sources cited the uncertainty of rains this year and favorable weather as reasons for the reduction in electricity demand.

Demand has been declining for the last three months, but in the current year, the demand has been increasing by two per cent, official sources said.

Demand for electricity is not only a sign of economic slowdown in the country, it can also worsen the state of power distribution companies, ”said an official of the Association of Power Producers.

Electricity companies are under stress due to delays and non-payment of bills by DISCOMs. According to government data, DISCOMs have yet to pay power companies more than Rs 3,000 crore.

All the indicators currently being released in the country indicate that industrial activity is slowing down. Manufacturing companies have been affected by slow consumption demand. October's manufacturing and services sector PMI has also not been particularly encouraging.
