New delhi date. April 6, 2020, Monday

In the rabi season, two major crops of pulses are approved by the Central Government for purchase of chana and lentils at the support price of lentils. The government has released Rs 5 crore to procure approximately 1.5 lakh tonnes of these pulses together, sources in the central government said.

Following the lilies of the Center, these thirteen states will no longer have to get the approval of the official to start the purchase. State governments will be able to buy up to 5% of the pulses produced in their state immediately. This will have to be purchased under various schemes of the Central Government.

Ravi chickpea production is estimated at 8 million tonnes in the 2-3 year season, while the production of lentils is estimated at 1.5 lakh tonnes. The thirteen states that are currently sanctioned include Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand.

Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are two major producing states of Mysore, but they are not currently given this permission, sources said. Rajasthan and Haryana have also been given permission to buy Raida.

An estimate from the lockdown is affecting agriculture and allied sectors, an official of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research said. The lockdown will take steps to ensure food security is not affected.

It is worth mentioning here that the moisture content was high in the country during the monsoon long period last year which resulted in favorable conditions for the ravi crop. Apart from kharif, ravi crops are also expected to rise significantly.
