The government's target is to buy a total of 50 million tonnes of rice

Mumbai, Ta. 29

The government agency plans to procure an estimated 50 million tonnes of rice from farmers in the 2018-20 (October-September) season as farmers are eager to sell rice to government agencies at support prices as the possibility of selling goods to private traders is reduced amid the lockdown imposed by Kovid-12. The purchase will be about 5 per cent of the total production estimate for the current season, Agriculture Ministry sources said.

Lockdowns take a lot of time to sell goods in mandis. The Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments have decided to buy whole ripe rice in their states.

The Food Corporation of India has already procured 25 million tonnes of rice by March 31 of the current season.

The agency plans to procure another 1.5 crore tonnes of rice from farmers due to Kovid-12. Thus, a total of five to five crore rice will be procured by government agencies at support prices in the current season, the sources said.

The agency procured 25 million tonnes of rice last season, the highest ever. The support price for common variety of rice was fixed at Rs. 1915 per quintal while for A grade rice it was fixed at Rs.

The Central Corporation of Rice and Wheat operates the Food Corporation in the country. On April 1, the food corporation had stocks of 251 million tonnes of rice and 25 million tonnes of wheat, three and a half times the standard of buffer stocks.

The corporation, on the other hand, has not yet lifted the stock of rice from the mills as it has a storage capacity of 25 million tonnes, sources said.
