Garment industry export orders turned to other countries
MUMBAI: Corona's impact is still being felt by garment manufacturers in Tirupur, the country's garment hub. According to sources in the Tirupur Exporters' Association, about 10 per cent of the orders for the coming winter season went to garment manufacturers from rival countries Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia and China.
Corona's first wave saw an 8 per cent drop in export orders, while the second wave had an even more serious impact. During the second wave of Corona, most of the manufacturing units at Tirupur were closed for about a month and a half.
The shutdown has hit production in the region to the tune of about Rs 10,000 crore, sources said.
Garments worth Rs 500 crore were exported from Tirupur in the financial year 2015-16, but in the last financial year, the export figure fell to Rs 2,000 crore due to corona.
Sources claimed that we could not send samples to importers in a timely manner for the monsoon season, which led to some orders going to garment manufacturers from competing countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia.
In India, when the second wave was going on, trade was going on in the competing countries which helped them in getting orders.
