50 percent decline in retail sales in June

MUMBAI: Retail sales fell by 50 per cent in June this year as compared to 2012. The highest decline was in the eastern states of the country, according to the Retail Association of India's (RAI) business survey report for June. In terms of category, sports equipment declined by 3% in June as compared to June 2016, while jewelery sales declined by 3% in June this year as compared to June 2017.

However, grocery sales fell by only seven per cent. Due to the first wave of Corona in 2020, business conditions were deteriorating at that time, so the 2016 figures have been taken into account by Rai for comparison.

The retail industry is still in a tense situation due to time constraints for business operations and lockdowns on weekends, said Rai's CEO Kumar Rajagopal in a statement.

By region, the western states saw the biggest decline of 30 per cent after the eastern states. However, June's retail performance was better than May's. In May this year, retail trade was 3 per cent lower than in May 2016.

Apparel sales fell 5 per cent year-on-year in May, compared to 9 per cent in June. Given the serious impact of the second wave of Corona in April-May, most states were forced to take regulatory action, which has had a direct impact on retail trade.
