50-year long rally in Indian stock market: Mark Mobius
MUMBAI: The Indian stock market continues to hit new highs while Chinese markets are slowing down. With that in mind, well-known stock investor and analyst Mark Mobius has allocated about half of its emerging-market funds to India and Taiwan to help offset the decline in China's stock market, which has reduced the overall returns of developing countries.
Veteran investor Mark Mobius has allocated about 50 per cent of the funds allocated for emerging markets to equities in India and Taiwan. The allocation comes in a bid to offset a decline in returns from developing countries due to falling Chinese stock prices.
In an interview to a TV channel, Mark Mobius said that India is on a 20-year rally even if there is a slight recession. India today has reached where China was ten years ago.
Efforts by the Government of India to implement a uniform policy across the state will be helpful in the long run. However, Mobius' view of Indian equities is in stark contrast to previous downgrades of Indian equities by some global brokerage houses, including Nomura and Morgan Stanley.
Emerging market equities have lagged behind their rivals in the current year. Extensive regulatory measures taken by the Chinese government have resulted in lower valuations of Chinese equities.
People say that emerging markets are looking weak, and for this they give the example of China's declining index, but other emerging markets such as India's index are rising. He also said that the decline in China's equities has provided some opportunities.
Nomura had earlier downgraded Indian equities from overweight to neutral, citing risk-averse returns in Indian equities. Stating that the performance of equities in China and other Asian countries has been lower than in India in the current year, the brokerage house suggested diverting funds.
