Banks increase NPA provision by 10 per cent to Rs. 31,891 crore


MUMBAI: Total bad loan provision by banks increased in the December quarter after declining in the previous two quarters. This trend reversal is mainly due to higher provisions by public sector banks which have gradually focused on improving the provisioning coverage ratio.

The provision for NPAs by private banks increased by 7.5% in the December quarter compared to the same quarter last year, but declined by 2.4% year-on-year.

The net interest income (NIIs) of the banks included in the analysis declined by 0.4% quarter-on-quarter and 0.5% year-on-year to Rs. 1.4 lakh crore, which is due to reduction in interest income of private banks. On a quarterly and annual basis, net interest income of private banks declined by 2.4 per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively.

The interest income of public sector banks, on the other hand, has increased by 3% and 6.5% quarterly and year-on-year, respectively. Total covid provisioning by banks was Rs. 6,08.5 crore in the December quarter to Rs. 2,31 crore. The accumulated covid provision by sample banks fell to Rs. 2,31 crore as against Rs. 6,096 crore.
