New Delhi, dated 25 November 2022, Friday
Amazon Company has reportedly told the Ministry of Labor that it has not fired any employees and only those who have been let go. who had accepted the severance package and chose to separate on their own. This came in response to a petition filed by Pune-based employee union, Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), with Labor Minister Bhupendra Yadav. It has been claimed that Amazon has forcibly fired a large number of employees in India. A representative of Amazon presented his statement before the Deputy Labor Commissioner of the Union Ministry of Labor in Bengaluru. No representative of Amazon India was present in the hearing.
Sources further revealed that every year he reviews his workforce across verticals and checks if there is any need for realignment. Workers were free to choose or reject the reorganization plan, Amazon said. If they accept the plan, they will get a "fair severance package." It was maintained that no employee was asked to leave the organization. But, he was advised to act at his own discretion. The company claimed in May that it has created 1.16 million direct and indirect jobs in India. By 2025, it has promised to create 2 million in the country. It has offices in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Recently, the company laid off 10,000 employees globally. Which is about 3 percent of its total workforce.
On November 18, Amazon CEO Andy Jesse warned employees that more layoffs would occur at the company as early as 2023 "as leaders continue to make adjustments". "Those decisions will be shared with affected employees and organizations in early 2023," he said in a statement late Nov. 18. "We have not yet concluded exactly how many other roles will be affected. But, when we have the details. Then, each leader will communicate with their respective teams," Ceci added. "This year's review is more difficult due to the fact that, the economy is in a challenging state and we have made jobs rapidly over the last several years," said Jesse. The massive job cuts affect several divisions, most notably the Alexa virtual assistant business and Luna's cloud gaming unit.
