Effect of high temperature on sowing performance of summer crops


- Moderate decrease in current cultivated area compared to last year

Mumbai: In the current season, the area under summer crops has been modestly lower by 3.30 percent compared to this period last year. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture, the cultivated area in the current year period is 69.97 lakh hectares as compared to 71.92 lakh hectares as on May 19 last year.

The current high temperature in the country is believed to have affected the sowing performance.

Cultivation of pulses has remained moderately high while rice has seen a decline. As against last year's 30.28 lakh hectares, rice cultivation in the current season has decreased by seven percent to 28.07 lakh hectares.

Cultivation of pulses has been 19.81 lakh hectares against 19.09 lakh hectares. The figures also show that green gram sowing has increased to 16.33 lakh hectares.

In durum grains, millet, sorghum crops have been harvested more while maize is showing a decrease. Plantation of oilseeds is seen to be moderately low. As against last year's area of ​​11.02 lakh hectares, the figure for the current year is 10.17 lakh hectares. Sowing of groundnut has decreased to 4.94 lakh hectares as against 5.46 lakh hectares. A decrease of 9.50 percent is seen in groundnut cultivation
