A survey on the challenges facing the youth, from education to unemployment, found shocking results


Today's youth are most worried about the rising unemployment in the country. Youngsters believe that the biggest problem for them today is to find a job after their studies. Finding a job today has become very difficult as compared to before. The main reason for this is that fewer jobs are currently being created. At the same time, only 5 percent of young people are choosing science for higher education. These matters have come to light in a survey conducted by Lok Niti-CSDS.

9316 youth aged 15 to 34 participated in the survey

The survey was conducted in 18 states including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, Jharkhand, Assam, Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Delhi. Conducted among 9316 youth aged 15 to 34 years. Fieldwork for the survey was conducted in November and December 2022. In this survey, when youth were asked about the country's biggest problem, they ranked unemployment at the top.

Unemployment is the biggest problem

36 percent of the youth surveyed have considered unemployment as the biggest problem. 16 percent of youth consider poverty as the biggest problem. 13 percent of the youth said that inflation is the biggest problem for them. 6 percent of the surveyed youth considered corruption as the biggest problem. According to 4 percent of youth, online education is a major problem. At the same time, 4 percent of young people think that population growth is a major problem. 18 percent of the people surveyed did not give any answer.

Most of the youth are interested in arts

The survey asked young people about their choice of field of study. One-third, or 35 percent, of the youth surveyed said Arts/Humanities was their first choice for study. 20 percent of the youth involved in the survey showed interest in science. 8 percent of youth said commerce as their choice. It is to be noted that only 5 percent of the youth surveyed said Science/Technology as their choice, while 16 percent of the youth said mixed subjects were their choice.

Government or private job?

In the survey, the youth were asked to choose either government or private jobs. 61 percent of the youths included in the survey considered government jobs as their priority. 27 percent of the youth expressed their desire to start their own business, venture or start-up. Only 6 percent youth wanted to do private jobs.

Problem of internet interruption during online class

The youth involved in the survey were asked about the problems encountered during online classes and online studies during the Corona period. Among them, 39 percent of the youth cited poor internet connectivity as a major problem. At the same time, 80 percent of the youth admitted that there was a problem with studies during the Corona period and the lockdown. While 5 percent of the youth admitted that they did not face any problem in studying during the lockdown.

Education sector is another choice of youth

According to the survey, the second choice of the youth in terms of career is the education sector. 14 percent of youth want to take up education and related work as a profession. 6 percent of the youth involved in the survey want to go into government jobs. 8 percent want to be in police and 3 percent in administrative services. Only 2 percent of young people expressed a desire to continue with their current job.
