Significant speed in kharif sowing operations following heavy rainfall across the country

Extensive rainfall over the country during the week ended with most of the kharif crop cultivation increased. In particular, oilseeds and cereal sowing have increased significantly in the past week, data from the Ministry of Agriculture says. Last week, the kharif cultivation area increased to 1 lakh hectares compared to 5 lakh hectares last week. However, the area under cultivation is still less in the current year as compared to August 1 last year. By August 1 last year, kharif sowing was done on an area of 1 lakh hectares.
Rice acreage is still down 8.5% compared to last year. Rice cultivation has been completed on an area of 1 lakh hectares so far this year against 5 lakh hectares last year. The cultivation of pulses is also 8.5% less than last year. Mug cultivation in pulses was down 5 percent while Aad's was down 8 percent, according to available data. In some states including West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand, rice cultivation has been low.
Oilseeds are almost identical to last year. Oilseeds have been sown on 1.8 lakh hectares this year as compared to last year's 1.8 lakh hectares. Peanut cultivation in oilseeds has been completed on an area of 1 lakh hectares in front of 1.5 lakh hectares.
Sowing of soyabean also ended at 8.5 lakh hectares against an area of 1.5 lakh hectares. Bajra and maize cultivation have increased in cereals, while sowing of sorghum is decreasing by 8.5% over last year. Cotton acreage remained high by 8.5 percent.
Due to the heavy rainfall in most of the states of the country for the last two weeks, kharif sowing has not only accelerated, but also the water level in the main reservoirs of the country has increased significantly.
