With the monsoon active, kharif sowing is expected to become normal this year

New Delhi, August 10, 2019, Saturday

The recent fall of kharif planting area, which has witnessed a monsoon monsoon across the country, has nearly diminished over the past week. However, rice cultivation in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa is still low compared to last year's kharif season.

In the coming days, paddy cultivation will catch up and decline, sources in the Agriculture Ministry said. As of August 1 last year, the total kharif acreage stood at 8.5 million hectares, which is down 8 percent from the current kharif season to 1.8 million hectares.

The Ministry of Agriculture is confident of covering an area of 1.5 million hectares under cultivation before the kharif sowing season is over. This is the average area of kharif sowing for the last five years.

Farmers in the eastern states have started sowing this year late. As of August 8, paddy cultivation has been reduced by 8.5% compared to last year, with an area of 8.5 million hectares. Since most kharif crops are currently at the sowing level, it is difficult to predict kharif production estimates this year.

Cotton acreage during the monsoon season has been higher by 8.5% compared to last year, while oilseeds are down by 8.5%. Pulses are showing a decline of 5.5% over last year.
