Surprising increase in China's April exports despite world trade disruption

Mumbai, May 08, 2020, Friday
China's import-export situation, where the coronavirus outbreak began, remained good in April compared to other countries in the world. Despite claims of trade disruption, China's April exports rose and imports fell. Despite the slowdown in global demand due to the corona, the increase in exports has come as a surprise to experts. Work from home is said to have boosted demand for China's electronics goods.
China's exports in April rose 6.50 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms, while imports fell 19.20 per cent, according to its customs department. Economists had expected an 11 per cent drop in exports and a 10 per cent drop in imports.
Global demand for electronics from China is also said to be temporarily offset by the rise of work-from-home culture due to the corona.
In the first quarter of any calendar year, China's exports slow due to the Lunar New Year and increase from April. China's exports were expected to decline due to steps taken by countries around the world to curb the spread of corona. This was due to cancellation of orders and disruption of supply chain.
The increase in April exports is believed to be due to the policy adopted by Chinese exporters to offset the decline in exports in the first quarter of 2020. However, China's exports are expected to decline in the short term as its major trading partners plunge into recession. April's trade surplus stood at ૪૫ 2.50 billion, well above the 2.50 billion estimate.
The surprise increase in China's April exports reflects a faster-than-expected recovery in production. Chinese exporters are in a hurry to fulfill orders received before the outbreak of coronavirus. Experts believe that once this backlog is cleared, it will be possible to estimate the impact of Corona on China's exports.
