Knitwear exporters started getting orders but the shortage of workers was also a big challenge

Six months after the outbreak of the coronavirus, global trade is opening up and the country's Tirupur knitwear exporters are starting to receive hefty orders, but labor shortages continue to be a challenge for businesses here.
Over the past one month, exporters in Tirupur have started receiving orders and some have even received orders higher than the level of Koro's initiative. "We are not able to meet the sudden increase in demand as the workers who fled Corona have not returned in sufficient numbers yet," said an official of the Tirupur Exporters' Association.
About 30 to 5 per cent of the displaced workers, mostly from the North India region, have not returned to work.
Submissions have been made to the Center to increase the movement of trains so that the workers can return easily. Exporters in Tirupur also believe that it is time to seize the opportunity created by the Corona protests against China.
Markets in Europe and America have opened up and are getting good response from there. We are getting good orders from major export hubs but it is doubtful that orders will be met on time due to shortage of workers.
Orders for spring are coming. As many as 1.5 lakh workers working in knitwear and other industries in and around Tirupur fled their homes due to the corona, with an estimated 50 to 6 per cent returning, sources said.
