The most serious impact of the ban on AC imports will be on China
Mumbai, Ta. 16 October 2020, Friday
The government has banned the import of refrigerators and air conditioners with the intention of speeding up the domestic production process as well as reducing the import of non-essential items. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, refrigerators and air conditioners have been removed from the free category in the import policy and placed in the restrictive category. The government last June banned the import of new pneumatic tires used in cars, buses and motorcycles.
The Indian government's decision to impose a complete ban on imports of air conditioners is likely to have the most serious impact on China. In an effort to boost domestic manufacturers and curb imports from China, the government imposed a sudden ban on imports of air conditioners late Thursday night.
Last fiscal, India imported કરોડ 500 million worth of ACs.
This was earlier in July when the import of TV was put on the banned list. The import of TVs will require a license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
A complete ban on imports of air conditioners will have a serious impact, market sources said. Most of the ACs imported to India are with refrigerants.
In the last financial year, India imported split ACs worth ૪૬ 280 million, of which ACs worth Rs 210 million were imported from China and ૮ 127 million worth from Thailand. Thus, the most serious impact of the ban on AC imports will be on China, said one analyst.
Window AC's imports stood at ૩ 290 million, of which ૧ 12 million came from Thailand and ૧ 12 million from China.
As a result of the border dispute with China, every import from there is scrutinized at India's entry points. As part of a self-reliant India, the government is taking steps to curb imports.
