The service sector PMI fell to a six-month low

MUMBAI: The country's service sector grew at a six-month low in January. The third wave of corona affected regulatory action by various states, the service sector said.
The January Service Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), prepared by IHS Markets, fell to a six-month low of 61.60. In December, the PMI stood at 7.50. An index above 50 is called an extension of that area.
New regulations by the states and measures like night curfew affected the service industry.
The new trade sub-index is the weakest since August. The increase in Corona cases has led consumers to choose to stay at home more often, resulting in a drop in demand for the service at home.
International demand was sluggish and contracted in the 6th month after the Corona outbreak. The trade expectations index was above 20, but remained the lowest since August, indicating a weakening positive sentiment, the report said.
Amid concerns over how long Corona's third wave would last, trade confidence plummeted and employment was cut. Companies in the service sector also became aware of price pressures. Raw material prices hit a 10-year high.
Given the price pressure, the possibility of the Reserve Bank raising interest rates at its next meeting is not ruled out.
For the second month in a row, service sector companies continued layoffs in January due to sluggish demand. The manufacturing PMI, which was announced earlier on Tuesday, also declined.
