Data laws will be further relaxed only on concrete need

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has asked major digital platforms to start preparing for compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. He said that if the big tech companies are asking for time before implementing the law, they have to give good and solid reasons for it. The government will issue draft rules to implement the law in the next 4 to 6 weeks. He said that the formation of the Data Protection Board can be done within 30 days. The government will proceed in a phased manner to adopt the new system. As state or central government agencies, panchayats or MSMEs are not ready to use the data, they may be given a little more time to adopt the new system. Small private entities and startups can also get more time. The government may issue at least 8 to 9 necessary regulations in the coming months to provide clarity in some provisions of the law.
