The sowing of pulses, cereals and oilseeds for the current kharif season is almost complete while the planting of rice is in progress. Despite the corona outbreak across the country, there has been a record increase in agricultural cultivation, indicating that the corona has not had any adverse effect on the country's agricultural sector.

As on September 11, kharif sowing has increased by 3.6 per cent to 1,109.5 lakh hectares as compared to the same period last year. Final figures for kharif sowing are expected to be released by the end of September. With the end of monsoon in September, kharif sowing is almost over.

In the current year, rice sowing has increased by 4.5 per cent to 206.5 lakh hectares as compared to last year and rice sowing is still going on, while sowing of pulses, pulses and oilseeds is almost complete, Agriculture Ministry sources said.

According to the data, the area under pulses has increased by 2.4 per cent while that under oilseeds has increased by 10.8 per cent. Conditions have been favorable for kharif sowing this year with good monsoon across the country.

Sugarcane cultivation in cash crops has remained modestly high while cotton acreage has increased by 6.15 per cent. Conditions are also looking favorable for rabi crops, which have high water levels in the country's major reservoirs. Sources also said that the possibility of a decline in edible oil imports due to high oilseed crop is not ruled out.
