There is no one to take Air India, will the central government lock it forever?

- Has a debt of Rs 60,000 crore

New Delhi Dated 16th September 2020 Wednesday

The central government's desire to privatize state-owned airline Air India is unlikely to materialize. After the announcement made by the central government to sell Air India, no one seems to be taking it at present.

Under these circumstances, the central government seemed likely to lock up Air India forever. At present, Air India has a debt of Rs 60,000 crore.

Union Public Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had hinted that if no one came forward to buy Air India, the Maadi government could lock it up forever. Right now there are only two options - either sell it or lock it up.

Hardeep Singh made the remarks on Tuesday before introducing the aircraft amendment bill in the Rajya Sabha. However, he hoped that Air India would find a new owner.

He also said that the government has provided Rs 30,520 crore to Air India since 2011-12. This amount could have been used for education, health or social work. But the government has so far continued to provide financial assistance to Air India to prevent hundreds of Air India employees from being fed.

The central government had extended the deadline for bidding to buy the company to October 30. Corona affected the economy of the whole world. With that in mind, the central government extended the bidding date. The government had started preparations for the sale of Air India on January 27 this year.

The Tata Group, which was instrumental in founding Air India, was ready to buy Air India.
