The government issued 148 notices to e-commerce companies in 3 months

New Delhi: The Center has issued 13 notices to e-commerce companies in three months. According to the information received, 12 notices have been issued to e-commerce companies in three months for violating the Country of Origin disclosure rules on items sold on the platform.

The country of origin of the items sold on the e-commerce platform has been made mandatory to display the information and strict action is being taken against those who do not comply. Following a border dispute with China in July 2020, the Delhi High Court had issued notices to Amazon and Flipkart on appeals seeking disclosure of the country of origin of products sold on the e-commerce site. The Notified Consumer Protection (Ecommerce) Rules-2020 also mentions the Country of Origin rules.

The information officer said that out of 12 notices, 4 have accepted the charge and paid a fine of up to Rs 2 lakh. In addition to the basic information on each product, the name of the country of origin must be indicated. According to the Legal Metrology Act, such violations can result in a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.

In the case of e-commerce, the information of the products sold on their platform must be clearly displayed. Companies are given the opportunity to make representations in its favor, and are asked where product details (online) can be obtained.
