Inflation in the country is expected to rise if production of pulses and oilseeds declines

MUMBAI: Despite the resumption of monsoon in some parts of the country, kharif sowing is still slow compared to last year. The delay in kharif sowing could be a cause for concern for the current season's kharif production, Agriculture Ministry sources said.

As on July 15, kharif sowing was completed on a total area of 3.11 crore hectares as against 2.31 crore hectares in the same period last year. The area under pulses is 15.10 per cent while that under oilseeds is 15.50 per cent lower.

Any decline in kharif production, especially in oilseeds and pulses, could further push up the prices of these commodities. Pulses and oilseeds are currently trading higher.

The kharif sowing so far this year is even lower than the average of the last five years. Sowing is 3% lower than average.

Kharif sowing has started in the country from the first week of June, but this year's monsoon lengthening has affected sowing operations.

The sowing of urad in pulses has declined by 2.50 per cent as compared to last year while that of mugs has declined by 21 per cent.

Peanut cultivation in oilseeds has declined by 19.12 per cent while soybean sowing area has declined by 11.5 per cent. Cotton cultivation is also declining by more than 15 per cent.

Prior to the onset of the monsoon, the observatory department had forecast a normal monsoon this year.
