Quality standards were issued for copper products, drums and tin containers

New Delhi: The government has issued mandatory quality standards for copper products, drums and tin containers to reduce substandard imports and promote domestic manufacturers.

In this regard, two separate notifications - Drums and Tins (Quality Control) Order, 2023 and Copper Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023 - have been issued by the government.

No goods under this order can be manufactured, sold, stocked, traded and imported without the mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards.

This order shall come into effect with the expiry of 6 months from the date of publication of the Sadar Notification in the e-Gazette.

Copper and its alloys are mostly used in power generation, power transmission, telecommunications, power circuits and some other equipment. In such a situation the quality of copper products must be the best and purity should not be compromised at any cost.

The nine copper products covered under this order include rods of electrical equipment, copper tubes for condensers and copper tubes used for heat exchangers, refrigeration and AC purposes.

Thus, drums and tins are used for the handling and storage of some hazardous, flammable materials. Thus, the quality of tins and drums used for such items must be strong.

Violation of any provision of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or a fine which may extend to two lakh rupees for a first offence.
