Is Mukesh Ambani going to pay Anil's debt? The most acute question of the Supreme Court

- Informed sources say Mukesh will not pay

Is Anil Ambani's elder brother Mukesh Ambani to pay Anil Ambani's Rs 31,000 crore debt to Reliance Communications? That was the sharp question asked by the Supreme Court on Friday. Earlier, when Anil Ambani was in financial trouble, Mukesh helped him. So the Supreme Court may have asked such a question.

Now, according to informed sources in Reliance Jio, Mukesh Ambani may refuse to answer this question. Reliance Jio's argument is that even if Anil's company is currently using RCom's spectrum. The debt on its head is from before 2016. During the hearing of the AGA case, the apex court took a new turn by asking whether Geo would repay the debt of the bankrupt RCom.

Sources in Reliance Jio say that the bulk of the debt incurred by the telecom department on RCom is 2G and 3G as before 2016. However, it was submitted in the Supreme Court that the amount due from RCom was calculated till the financial year 2017. The Rs 25,199.27 crore arrears on Reliance Communications also included spectrum usage charges and license fees. Reliance Jio paid its outstanding balance of Rs 195.18 crore in January this year.

Reliance Jio's argument is that RCom's debt has nothing to do with spectrum sharing. "We have already been paying spectrum usage charges to the government," Reliance Jio told the apex court on Friday. It also means that Mukesh Ambani cannot refuse to pay Anil's debts.
