Modi government will introduce plastic notes instead of paper notes
The Modi government is exploring the possibility of switching to polymer i.e. plastic currency notes instead of paper currency notes in the future. A research paper presented by a think-tank-Council for International Economic Understanding (CIEU) claims that India should become self-sufficient in its own currency if it wants to create a five trillion dollar economy. For that, notes should be made of polymers instead of paper because India is the second largest producer of BOPP films in the world.
At present, India has to import expensive paper from abroad for currency notes. Due to this, the load will be reduced and the polymer knots will last longer. Modi government is interested in this research paper.
