- America's Micron and Korea's Simtech, India's Tata Group to set up semiconductor plant in Gujarat
The plant of the American company Micron has already done special work in Sanand GIDC. Micron will invest approximately 2.75 billion dollars in this plant. In July 2023, an agreement was reached to set up the Micron plant. In just 90 days, all the approvals including the land were given and the installation of the plant has started. Not only Micron, Tatagroup is also getting into fab manufacturing. Discussions are underway with the Gujarat government to set up its unit in Dholera.
A Korean company Simtech has also entered into an MoU with the Gujarat government to supply the raw materials required to manufacture semiconductors to Micron. After this agreement, 30 acres of land has also been allotted to them in Sanand GIDC. Simtech plant will be installed in a very small area of this land. Another 249 components needed to make semiconductors will be made in the remaining space. Thus their investment will also come in handy. Microtech has tied up with Micron and Nemtech to prepare manpower before its unit starts up. Similarly, agreements for cyber security and official intelligence have also been signed. Apart from Micron and Simtech, Sanand is also likely to have several units to manufacture semiconductors. In technical terms, the entire ecosystem for manufacturing semiconductors is ready. With Micron, Simtech and Tata Group announcing contracts to set up semiconductor chips plants in Gujarat, the confidence of companies involved in the production of semiconductors around the world has increased in India. These companies will also come forward to manufacture semiconductors in India.
Secondly, new job opportunities will be created for the youth who will be trained to develop skills in making semiconductors. Budding IT graduates should consider this opportunity and prepare for it now. 10 lakh new jobs will be created in India as semiconductor plants come up. There is a possibility of creating a large number of jobs in Gujarat too. The skill of making semiconductors requires very fine skills. A good job opportunity is being created for the youth who prepare to possess this skill. In the beginning, they have hired approximately 200 people to avoid manpower shortage in the Sanand plant. Training has been started in Malaysia and Mohali. The Government of India has entered into an agreement with 104 universities and institutes to prepare skilled manpower for the coming days. These institutes will run manpower training courses. If the youth of Gujarat acquire this skill, it will become easy for them to get a job in the coming days.
IIT Gandhinagar will be made a center of excellence for getting trained manpower for semiconductor industries. IIT Gandhinagar will be made a center of excellence for research and development to manufacture semiconductors. Semiconductors experts across the country will get a foundation for new research. With its help they will be able to do new research. The center of excellence will have lab facilities for research. They will also get equipment for testing research. Training will also be provided.
