Increased demand for computers due to e-learning and work from home

Mumbai, Ta. 11 November 2020, Wednesday

The market for personal computers (PCs) in the country grew significantly in the September quarter due to Corona's widespread adoption of e-learning systems and work-from-home systems. In the September quarter, PC imports grew by 2.50 per cent year-on-year to 3 lakh units, according to a research firm. These imports have been at a seven-year high.

In the third quarter of 2017, the total import figure of desktops, notebooks and workstations was 31 lakh units. The report said that due to the increase in e-learning due to coronavirus and increased demand for PCs due to work from home system, 3 lakh PCs were imported in September.

Imports are expected to remain high in the current quarter as demand for notebooks is much higher than current supply.

Demand for consumer notebooks is on the rise, especially in big cities, as education in schools and colleges across the country is still online. Vendors have been able to stock up despite supply challenges.

Uncertainty remains as to when schools and colleges will resume on a regular basis. This is forcing students to install electronic devices.

The report also notes that the rise in broadband connectivity in the country has made it easier for students to get an online education.
