Concern about low paddy and soybean planting due to late monsoon

Mumbai: In the current year, there is concern about the impact on the paddy and soybean cultivation due to the slow progress of the monsoon. Monsoon has not set yet in many states of the country which are important for agriculture sector. States like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh are witnessing a widespread deficit of rainfall. Cyclone Biparjoy has hampered the progress of monsoon in Gujarat last week.

Monsoon may be lax at present but rains are expected to level off in the remaining three months, but sowing is becoming difficult for farmers due to laxity. Farmers especially growing paddy are worried, as paddy requires more water.

Sources in the Ministry of Agriculture said that a large number of farmers are switching to pulses after harvesting rice. Because pulses require less water.

Apart from rice, soybean crops are also being affected in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The largest crop of rice in the country is grown in West Bengal.

According to the current season so far, rice planting is seen to be down by 34 percent while soybeans are down by 36 percent. The overall pulses crop has increased by 3.80 percent.
