After PM Modi's visit to America, now India has decided to reduce the duty on eight American products, including the famous Washington apple. The government hopes that due to this, India's steel and aluminum products will also get easy entry into the American market.

Due to the government's decision, the import duty of 20 percent levied on apples so far will be removed. However, protests against this decision have started among apple farmers in India. However, the Indian government has assured that this decision will not affect the apple market in India. On the contrary, it will increase competition and benefit consumers. People will be able to get good quality apples. Customs duty is to be reduced only on premium quality apples.

The Indian government imposed an additional duty of 20 percent on Washington Apple in 2019. Because America had increased the tariff on steel and aluminum products imported from India. Due to India's decision, the import of American apples to India was decreasing. A whopping 1.27 lakh tonnes of apples were imported in 2019. This figure decreased to 4.4 thousand tons last year.

American Apple is in demand in many countries including India. However, after India imposed an additional duty of 20 percent, the total duty on them rose to 70 percent and due to this, these apples were not in a position to compete in the Indian market.

The chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, an apple-producing state in India, has criticized the Indian government's decision to reduce the duty on American apples and said that this decision will prove harmful for Indian farmers.
