When the Modi government wants to make the country a five trillion economy and banks have to play the most important role in it, an interesting thing has come out that out of the total 11 government banks in the country, 6 banks do not have non-executive chairman. These banks include UCO Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Indian Bank and Bank of India. UCO Bank and Bank of Maharashtra have not appointed a part-time chairman since the posts of chairman and MD were separated in 2015. Independent directors are also not sufficient in most government-owned banks. This came to light when the issue was raised in a meeting of board members of state-owned banks with the Governor of the Reserve Bank.
