Government crackdown on misbehaving drug plants
AHMEDABAD: Preparations are underway to take strict action against drug manufacturing plants that are cheating in business management including drug production and other operations. The Drug Controller General of India has issued show cause notices to several plants in this regard. 45 'sensitive' manufacturing units in Himachal Pradesh have been kept under surveillance after checking the plants of various companies. Even the World Health Organization during its investigation into drug adulteration confirmed adulteration or poor quality of Indian drugs and is still receiving many complaints.
Officials of the Drug Controller General of India have collected data on 'Not of Standard Quality' (NSQ) category drugs in tests from 2019 to 2022. Officials have also made a list of names of manufacturing units of these drugs. According to the report, the regulator has identified 209 pharma companies that have received more than 11 notes of standard quality. Regulators investigated 51 companies in Himachal Pradesh and issued notices to 26 manufacturing units. Himachal Pradesh is the pharma manufacturing hub of the country and there are about 1500 units in the state.
According to information received from government documents, 16 manufacturing companies have been directed to stop manufacturing orders, while two companies have received firm cancellation notices. Officials say the drug regulator has so far investigated 137 errant companies. In the first phase, a total of 178 out of 209 companies were selected for joint investigation by both the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization and the State Licensing Unit.
