Banks in twenty-two countries have opened Vostro accounts to trade in rupees

New Delhi: As part of reducing trade transactions in dollars, banks of twenty-two countries of the world have opened special rupee Vostro accounts in Indian banks, it was said in Parliament. Local banks can provide international banking services through vostro accounts to customers who require international banking.
The new arrangement is expected to reduce demand for the dollar in the coming years.
State Finance Minister Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, in reply to a written question in the Lok Sabha, said that the government is in discussions with the business community to ease the administrative process for the implementation of this mechanism.
Banks of the countries that have opened Vostro accounts mainly include Germany, Mauritius, New Zealand, Russia, Sri Lanka, UK, Malaysia etc.
The Reserve Bank had created a special mechanism last year as part of increasing world trade through rupee transactions. After this mechanism, the internationalization of the rupee is gaining momentum.
Not only is India the fastest growing economy in the world, but considering that it has shown resilience against many major challenges, the Indian rupee has the capacity to internationalize, according to a recent report, the committee of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to suggest steps to internationalize the Indian rupee.
It is also being expressed that the widespread use of rupee in invoicing and settlements in international trade will give this currency a wide presence at the global level.
