Paddy sowing surpassed last year's figure after an initial dip

New Delhi: The area under cultivation in the current kharif season has crossed last year's figure for the first time at the end of July 21. At the end of July 21, sowing was completed on a total area of 7.33 crore hectares, according to the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture. This number is 1.20 percent more than last year. In the country, kharif cultivation is generally done on an area of 10 crore hectares.
On a positive note, paddy cultivation, which remained lower than last year till the second week of July, was 2.70 per cent higher than last year at 1.80 crore hectares.
The pace in paddy planting will see the authorities ease concerns over rice prices in the country. However, the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture show that the sowing of Tuwer and Addad is still lower by 18.30 percent and 9.50 percent respectively compared to last year.
However, seeing the progress of rains in most parts of the country, it is expected that the shortfall in the sowing area of Urad and Tuwer will be removed in the coming days.
A total of 363 mm of rain has been recorded in the country from June 1 to July 21, which is 3 percent more than normal. Among other kharif crops, oilseeds cultivation has been as high as three percent. Sowing of groundnut has been 1.20 percent while that of soybean has been 2.80 percent.
Meanwhile, with the arrival of the new crop of tomatoes, prices are expected to drop significantly in the coming days. The supply of new goods is about to start from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
Rice prices increased by Thailand and Vietnam after India's export ban
Rice exporting countries Thailand and Vietnam have hiked rice prices by five to ten dollars per tonne after India on Thursday imposed a ban on non-basmati white rice exports with immediate effect. Traders are assessing the impact of India's ban on the world market and do not want to panic buy, but Thailand and Vietnam have raised prices as expected, a domestic exporter said. As its share is about 40 percent, prices have been increased by other exporting countries in view of the possibility of supply shortage going forward.
