Restrictions on SME shares tightened
Amid the rapidly growing interest of investors in the stocks of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), stock markets have announced the implementation of surveillance measures i.e. graded surveillance measures in a phased manner. Exchanges said the decision to extend supervision to SMEs was taken in a joint meeting with market regulator Sebi. A monitoring system comes into play when some irregularities are found in the financial affairs of a company. To protect investors' interests, brokers stop trading or buying monitored stocks. The monitoring arrangements will be in addition to all other monitoring measures undertaken by the exchanges from time to time. The monitoring regime for SME stocks will be effective from the quarter ending September 2023. The exchanges will release the first list of selected companies during the quarterly review of major securities. The change coincides with the introduction of a short-term additional surveillance measure framework and trade-to-trade settlement for SME stocks in September. The objective of this decision is to reduce betting activities and prevent improper returns in this segment.
