Magnesium-Mg is a metallic element. It is a silvery, moderately hard alkaline-earth metal. All of which can be fabricated with strong reducing agents and aluminum type electrical conductivity. Magnesium is the central element of the chlorophyll molecule. It is a special component of the red blood corpuscle (the ultrafine substance of the water body). Spec.Grey.1.74, melting point 650°C, boiling point 1107°C. Soluble in water.

1. Source :- Magneside and dolomite, from sea water or brine.

2. Derivation :- (1) Electrolysis of fused magnesium chloride. (2) Reduction of magnesium oxide with ferrosilicon.

3.Magnesium :- Fine powder of 99.5% purity, which is available in the form of bars, seats, rods, plates, tubing, ribbons, flakes.

4. Hazards :- (Solid metal) which is a component that burns at 650 degree Celsius. Dangerous flammable fire risk, sand or talc can be used as fire controller.

5. Uses :- Can be used in aluminum alloy parts, die-cast, auto parts, flash photography, production of Aryan, Nickel, Zinc, Titanium, Zirconium, Cathodic, Protection, Optical Mirror, Dry and Wet batteries.

Magnesium Oxide :- (Magnesia) MgO - is produced in two ways. (1) Puffy (light) materials are obtained by dehydrating the hydroxide at low temperatures. (2) Dense materials are obtained at high temperatures as oxides.

Property :- White powder, light or heavy powder, made by heating magnesium carbonate or basic magnesium carbonate. Melting point 2800 C. grade, boiling point 3600 C. grade. Soluble in acid and ammonia salt solution.

Derivation : (1) Calcining magnesium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide

(2) By treating magnesium chloride with lime and heating, or heating it in air

(3) From sea water via hydroxide.

Uses :- Refractory, polycrystalline ceramic for aircraft wind shield, electrical insulation, pharmaceutical and cosmetic, in organic rubber, oscillator, oxychloride and oxysulphate cement, paper manufacturing, fertiliser, food and feed additive.

Magnesium Carbonate :- MgCO3 is a natural material. This natural material is called magnesite.

Property :- Light, Bulky white powder, Bulk density about 4 per cubic foot, Specific gravity 3.0, Decompose at 350 C. grade, Refractory index about 1.52, Soluble in acid, In soluble in alcohol, Non toxic.

Derivation :- (1) Natural materials, (2) Carbonation of MgO or Mg(OH)2 with CO2, (3) Reaction of a soluble Mg salt solution with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate.

Uses :- Magnesium salt, heat insulation rubber, reinforcing agent, ink, glass, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, table salt, antacid, food as a drying agent, anticaking agent

Milk of magnesia (magnesia magma) is separated by keeping a white, opacified or less viscous suspension of magnesium hydroxide in water.

Uses :- Medicine, Laxative.
