The cancellation of orders in the US and Europe is a big blow to apparel exporters

Mumbai, Ta. િલ April 2020, Saturday

Apparel exporters warn that millions of people will lose their jobs if no special concessions are announced for the country's apparel industry when factories are closed, workers have moved to homeland and global demand has dropped.

While industrial bicycles have been stalled during the lockdown period, India's apparel exporters have been hit hard by the cancellation of orders in the US and Europe.

In addition, the shortage of workers threatens to affect the working hours in the coming days.

According to industry estimates, up to 5% of apparel units are in the micro, small and medium (MSME) sectors. In the apparel industry, labor costs about 1 to 5 percent of the total cost. While in the home industry, the rate is generally around 1 to 5 percent.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the Apparel Export Promotion Council said that the apparel industry, which employs 5 million workers, will die if the government does not disclose the steps. The apparel industry is seasonal and the attraction of its products diminishes after a certain season is over.

The letter addressed to the Prime Minister by the Confederation of Indian Textiles Industry also demanded that all raw materials, dyes, chemicals, spares and accessories should be exempted from anti-dumping duty and customs duty.
