It is claimed that procurement of wheat at support prices is going on in full swing in the current year

Mumbai: Wheat procurement seems to be picking up pace in the current season. According to Food Corporation of India (FCI) figures, the government has so far procured 1.14 crore tonnes of wheat at support prices in the current season, which is 12 per cent more than the 99.80 lakh tonnes purchased by this period last year.
Stocks in government godowns fell to a seven-year low of 83 lakh tonnes on April 1. Due to decline in production, wheat stocks were seen to decline due to low purchase by government at support price and high private purchase.
FCI sources said that due to unseasonal rains in March, procurement of wheat at support prices started late in the current year.
The farmers decided to start the harvesting operation late due to the moisture level in the crop due to rain.
Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are the major wheat producing states in the country. There were reports of moderate damage to wheat crops in Punjab and Haryana due to unseasonal rains in March.
In the current season, the government plans to purchase 3.40 crore tonnes of wheat at the support price. Earlier, government sources said that the wheat export ban will continue until the government finds that domestic supply of wheat is in a favorable condition.
He also said that wheat production in the current season will come down to 11.20 crore tonnes.
