In the current season, the country's sugar production is expected to be as low as ten percent

Mumbai: In the sugar season of 2023-24, which started from October, till February 15, the country's sugar production has remained low by 2.50 per cent year-on-year to 2.23 crore tonnes, according to the data of the Indian Sugar Mills' Association (ISMA).
Last sugar season production figure was 2.29 crore tonnes. ISMA has said in its second estimate that the overall production in the current full sugar season is down by ten percent to 3.30 crore tonnes. The production of 2022-23 season was 3.66 crore tonnes.
Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka are witnessing a decline in production. However, production in Uttar Pradesh has been high. Maharashtra has the highest production of sugar in the country while Uttar Pradesh is the second.
In the current year, 505 sugar mills were operating till February 15 as against 502 mills in the previous season.
In 2023, sugarcane production was affected due to weak monsoon conditions, due to which the production is likely to be lower than the demand for sugar. In such a situation, India may be forced to import sugar for the first time in the last seven years.
In order not to disturb the ambitious biofuel program, the Indian government has allowed for limited use of sugar in the production of ethanol.
