Retail sales growth disappointing in January amid sluggish demand


Mumbai: In January of the current year, retail sales in the country have seen a modest year-on-year growth. The Retailers Association of India (RAI) reported a five percent growth in retail sales across all categories. Juj series benefited from the wedding season in January.

The survey report conducted by the association said that there has been a low growth in retail sales in categories other than jewellery, food and grocery.

Compared to January 2023, the retail sales of the current year have been disappointing, said Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of the association.

Demand for jewellery, food and grocery remained high due to the wedding season, while demand growth in other categories was subdued.

Sales growth in eastern and southern states has been weak. Demand for entertainment products remained weak in these states. Food, grocery and jewelery each saw a 9 percent growth in sales. Sales of sports goods and beauty products have grown by 8 percent and 6 percent respectively.

The sale of consumer durables has registered a decrease of 1 percent. Apparel saw two percent growth as January was the best month in terms of discounts.

If we look at the region wise, there was a 6 percent growth in the sales in the western states while the growth in the retail sales in the northern region was 5 percent.
