28% reduction in rail freight traffic following lockdown
New delhi date. 13 June 2020, Saturday
During the first two months of the financial year 2021, April and May, the freight traffic of the railways declined by 3 per cent due to the strict implementation of lockdown across the country. However, during this time there was a significant increase in the transport of food grains.
Various commodities are transported by railways. These mainly include coal, iron ore, cement, pig iron and grain. The lockdown also disrupted markets and businesses across the country and led to a sharp drop in the flow of various goods by railways.
Last year, during April-May 2016, a total of 206.31 metric tons of freight loading was done. In comparison, during April-May 2020, freight loading was recorded at 12.5 MT.
However, there was a significant increase in food grain shipments during this period as compared to the same period last year, in order to avoid shortage of various types of foodgrains during lockdowns across the country. During the same period last year, 4.21 metric tonnes of food grains were transported. Which reached 11.08 metric tons this year.
Last year, 102.08 metric tonnes of coal was transported. Which was 20.8 metric tons in the current year. Thus, it was reduced by 3 metric tons. The main reason behind the decline in coal transportation was the decline in demand for electricity. Due to lack of demand, sales of the state-owned Coal India fell by 3 per cent in April and 3 per cent in May.
Along with the decline in freight traffic, there was also a decline in freight earnings of the railways. During these two months, the income from transporting goods was Rs. 4 crore to Rs. 1213 crore. Which during the same period last year was Rs. 319 crore.
