Mumbai, Ta. Thursday, June 25, 2020

On June 1, foodgrain stocks crossed 100 million tonnes for the first time in the country. On June 1, the country had accumulated 108 million tonnes of foodgrains. Such a large quantity of grain will force the government to dispose of it immediately.

The government is considering disposing of the foodgrains by distributing them to the needy and poor, as the kharif crop is also expected to go up this year in view of the good monsoon conditions, which could be challenging, government sources said.

There is also a demand that the government should extend the free foodgrains scheme under the poor welfare package for another three months to ease the stock.

On June 1, 2016, the country's foodgrain stock stood at 331 million tonnes. In view of the impact of coronavirus on the employment of workers in the country, the government has set up a system of free distribution of foodgrains.

Stocks were also said to have risen as transport services were disrupted due to lockdowns in the country in April and May.

These stocks include wheat and rice. The recent kharif storms and the above-normal rainfall in various parts of the country have resulted in a vigorous and vigorous start to sowing in the current kharif season.

By the end of last week, kharif sowing was completed on an area of 121 lakh hectares in the country, which was 20 per cent more than the same period last year. Paddy is the main kharif crop.
