Another draft e-commerce policy coming soon
Mumbai, Ta. Thursday, June 25, 2020
The second draft of a new e-commerce policy, designed to protect the country's retail offline trade from the onslaught of e-commerce, is expected to be unveiled soon. Supported sources said that the proposed draft has taken note of the haphazard offer of prices and discounts on e-commerce platforms.
Although no decision has been taken on when the final policy will be announced, a meeting of the Department for the Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade will be held soon, sources said.
The price policy adopted by e-commerce, which is a major concern of the country's offline retailers, will be given a special place in this policy.
Discounts offered on online sales will be reviewed. The concerns of grocery store owners in the country will also be taken into account in formulating the policy.
Retailers have long been demanding a special policy to address the impact of online trade on the country's traditional retailers, but the government has been slow to do so.
The new policy will pay special attention to prices and will also cover issues such as imposing penalties on policy violators, the sources added. The new policy will not make it easier for some e-commerce platforms to work.
The draft policy was earlier unveiled in February last year, much to the displeasure of companies and the public.
