IT companies worried about US move to suspend H-1B visas
Mumbai, Ta. 13 June 2020, Saturday
The country's IT companies are worried after reports that President Donald Trump is considering suspending some employment-based immigrant visas, including H-1B visas, in view of rising unemployment in the United States.
However, the proposal will not issue new H-1B visas and will not affect existing visa holders. If such a decision continues for a long time, it will have the biggest impact on the country's IT companies.
Experts say the Trump administration will have to seek legal approval for this. The decision could have a significant impact on the upcoming elections in the United States in November.
The economic downturn caused by the coronavirus epidemic has resulted in more than 2.5 million jobless figures in the United States in the last two months. The impact of the ban on H-1B visas or L-1 visas depends on what type it comes from, sources in a local IT company said.
Any ban on H-1 visas could create a legal patch and at that point the government would hardly be able to defend itself. A number of visa applications have been filed for the fiscal year 2021 and the US has collected millions of dollars in fees, the sources added.
According to the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), the US administration cannot afford to revoke the visas of employees on non-immigrant visas in order to work in the infrastructure sector in the United States. However, Nasscom is of the opinion that technology sector employees should be excluded from any kind of ban.
